You've been thinking you may want to be a surrogate. You loved being pregnant. You are proud to be a mom and you want to help others to know the joy of having their own child. It's important to know that in order to become a surrogate, there are a number of requirements a woman must meet before beginning the full application process. Below are the initial requirements enforced by our agency and fertility clinic doctors.
- Between 21 and 40 years of age.
Age requirements are set by IVF clinics. Due to the increased health risks with age, 40-years old is typically the cut off for women to become a surrogate. However, exceptions may be made for women who have recently given birth with no complications and are in good health. - Must be a U.S Citizen or hold a permanent green card
It is important for all women to be U.S. citizens or have a permanent green card. Legal complications prevent non-citizens from becoming surrogates. - Live in a state where surrogacy is legal
Unfortunately, we cannot accept applicants from Nebraska, New York, Michigan, or Washington State, as state laws are unfavorable towards surrogacy. - Delivered at least 1 child
It is important that anyone who applies to become a surrogate has given birth at least once. Please keep in mind that if you have just recently given birth, we can start processing you immediately but you will not be able to have an embryo transfer until at least six months after the date of delivery. If currently breastfeeding, you may still apply, but you will need to have at least two regular menstrual cycles before an embryo transfer. An important note, having your tubes tied will not affect your eligibility to become a surrogate. - BMI of 33 or under
These Body Mass Index (BMI) requirements are set in place by all IVF clinics. We require documentation for all surrogates noting their current height and weight. This must be signed by a doctor. - No more than 3 prior Cesarean Sections
The limit on C-sections is another surrogate requirement for IVF purposes, this is to ensure the health and safety of both you and the child you are carrying. - Non-smoker/ Non- drug user
Even if you don't smoke, if your spouse/partner smokes, they must not do so in the house, the car or around you or your children as even second-hand smoke will show up in blood work. - Not currently on any anti-depressant/anti-anxiety medications
Another important surrogate requirement is that you must have stopped taking any medication for a minimum of six months. In all cases, we require documentation from your physician confirming that you are free of any medication.
When you apply to become a surrogate with Worldwide Surrogacy, if you meet all of these requirements, you will go on to complete a longer, full application. You will then be contacted by our Surrogate Recruiter with further information on our screening process.
