How to Choose a Fertility Clinic

While dealings with infertility aren't uncommon, chances are most people know someone who has worked with a fertility clinic and is willing to provide feedback regarding the services. Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) is becoming increasingly popular. The range of services available at fertility clinics offer emboldened hope for intended parents. Before committing to work with one fertility clinic, it is strongly advised to do some research. Make an informed decision to select the fertility clinic that will best meet your needs.

Ask Around

Word of mouth is a great way to begin the selection process. People you know and trust may recommend a fertility clinic and should be able to answer some of your preliminary questions. It is important to ask about the overall experience. Inquire about any doctors they preferred or any they might advise against. Talk to them about the support staff and overall tone at the clinic. While some intended parents might seek a warm and inviting clinic staff, others might consider staff interaction less important. Whatever your preference, it is helpful to find someone who can provide a first-hand experience.

Interview Potential Clinics

A great way to determine if a fertility clinic will match your needs is to call or visit the clinic and ask some questions. Find out exactly what services they offer. Learn about the success rates they have experienced with various procedures. A reputable fertility clinic will have statistics available. Be sure to ask specifically about their experience and success with embryo transfers. Remember to ask any additional questions that may be particular to your situation and pertinent to your decision making. This can include: age statistics of egg donors and/or women receiving the embryo transfer, how many children have been born as a result of an embryo transfer at their clinic, etc. The fertility clinic is there to provide services to you. Feel comfortable to ask the questions that will help you make a well-informed decision.

Responsibly Search the Internet

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) provides another available and reliable resource for statistical information. Searching the CDC website can lead intended parents to a wealth of information, including statistical data about specific fertility clinics in each of the United States. While the CDC website is a great place to gain information, it is still a strong recommendation that you conduct a more in-depth/up-to-date inquiry of any fertility clinic you are considering. The most recent CDC Assisted Reproductive Technology Fertility Clinic Success Rates report was updated in 2015.

Try to Stay Close to Home

Success rates with egg retrieval, fertilization and implantation are undoubtedly of the utmost importance. However, location may be another key consideration during the fertility clinic selection process. ART can require several, frequent visits to the clinic.

Whatever clinic you end up choosing, it is crucial to have an open dialogue with your clinic and specialists. It is important to feel comfortable and ask questions.

*Please note: This is a general synopsis. You should speak with your healthcare provider for more information and details about your individual process.
